Edna Smith was born in Ringgold, Louisiana on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1906, to Perry and Mealie Harrison Johnson. She attended Ebenezer Baptist Church’s Elementary School, John Holloway Middle School and Rosenwald High School to the sixth grade and graduated. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and was baptized at age thirteen. On December 22, 1922, at age sixteen, she married Walter Luke. They had two sons, Herman and Bunnie.
Walter passed away on December 2, 1934, the event that resulted in her moving to Houston in 1935 at age twenty-nine. She got a job at Chesterfield’s Restaurant in the downtown Houston. She advanced to the position of head chef; her job was to make thirty pies a day. She found a new church home--St. John Missionary Baptist Church. She met Isaac Smith who became her second and last husband on September 12, 1942.
During the last six years of her life she lived with her granddaughter Michele, and there she stayed until she went to be with the Lord on October 29, 2011. Edna said “The Lord blessed me with a long life (105 years), salvation through Jesus Christ, a loving family, and caring friends”.
