Help is available for bereaved families of violent crime victims
Information and Referral (in-person) - Homicide victims' families are often unaware of the availability of Crime Victims Compensation (CVC) assistance funds through their state. These funds are available to violent crime victims' families for related expenses that cannot be reimbursed from insurance or other sources. Some funeral homes are reluctant to share information about CVC assistance due to the potential delays in the application process, which determines whether or not funds will be forthcoming. 3ABF is often the first source to provide this information to the families of homicide victims. Assistance is also provided in identifying additional services and/or resources and arranging funeral, memorial or cremation services. This includes accompanying family members through funeral arrangements and interment.
Mediation - 3ABF mediates between the family, police investigator, CVC and the funeral home to expedite receipt of CVC emergency assistance, thus reducing delays in burying victims.
Counseling - 3ABF provides grief counseling to meet the individual and collective bereavement needs of the victim's family.
Assistance in Filing Compensation Claims - 3ABF works with the police department to gain resolution of any factors that might delay a decision from CVC. Timing is critical for bereaved families to begin the process of healing and closure. Due to the high volume of requests from various crime victims, Victim Services Agencies may not be able to submit applications immediately upon request. There also must not be any mitigating circumstances surrounding the crime before CVC will commit to payment.
Appeal Services - 3ABF assists families to appeal denials of CVC emergency assistance if a police investigation is in question.
